CARPLS presents Golden Gavel to Richard Devine

CARPLS, the Coordinated Advice and Referral Program for Legal Services that maintains a Cook County telephone hotline network of legal aid agencies, will present a Golden Gavel to Cook County State's Attorney Richard A. Devine on Thursday, May 22.

The 15th annual reception and award presentations will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on the sixth floor of the Northern Trust Bank, 50 S. LaSalle, Chicago.

The law firm of Kirkland & Ellis and Northern Trust also will be honored, and sports attorney Lester Munson will again be master of ceremonies. Music will be provided by The Scales of Justice.

Volunteer training set

CARPLS is looking for a few volunteers - licensed attorneys who are willing to field telephone calls from the public about consumer issues, bankruptcy questions and landlord-tenant problems.

Volunteers are invited to attend a training session from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, in CARPLS offices in suite 1850 at 17 N. State St., Chicago.

Under recently amended Supreme Court Rule 756, retired or inactive attorneys and in-house counsel may participate in such limited pro bono programs.

CARPLS seeks individuals who can commit to volunteering on two Wednesday nights each month. To attend the training session, send an e-mail to mgallagher@carpls.org.
