"Jack" Cooley, a former U.S. magistrate judge, was honored May 13 during the annual meeting of the Chicago chapter of the Association for Conflict Resolution. • • • Founding Northern District federal defender Terence F. MacCarthy, a Laureate of the ISBA Academy of Illinois Lawyers, has received the inaugural Lifetime Excellence in Advocacy Award from the Stetson University College of Law. A 1960 graduate of the DePaul University College of Law, MacCarthy became head of the nation's first Federal Defender Program in 1966. • • • The Addison Police-Fire Merit Review Board honored four members of the DuPage County state's attorney's office during an April banquet. They are assistant state's attorneys Steven Knight and Paul A. Marchese, and investigators Robert Holguin and Rachel Rieger. • • • John A. Biek of Neal, Gerber & Eisenstein, Chicago, has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel in recognition of his outstanding reputation and contributions in the field of tax law. An adjunct professor in the Chicago-Kent College of Law graduate tax program, Biek chairs the Unclaimed Property Subcommittee of the State and Local Tax Committee of the American Bar Association Section of Taxation. • • • Bannockburn attorney Myron Siegel has been appointed to the Hoffman Estates Economic Development Commission. Kirn has been certified as an arbitrator for securities-related disputes filed before the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. Former legal counsel to Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, Kirn is affiliated with St. Louis-based U.S. Arbitration and Mediation-Midwest. • • • Timothy S. Tomasik, a partner in Clifford Law Offices, Chicago, will speak in mid-July during the annual convention of the American Association of Justice in Philadelphia. Author of the article, "Air Traffic Control Liability," Tomasik will discuss the subject before the association's Aviation Law Section. He serves as counsel in property damage claims from the September 2001 collapse of the World Trade Center buildings in New York City. • • • Thomas J. Handler, managing principal of Handler, Thayer & Duggan, Chicago, was co-chair of the Southeast Asia Family Wealth Conference last month in Singapore.
