LTF to celebrate 25 years

The 25th anniversary of the Lawyers Trust Fund of Illinois will be celebrated Friday, June 13, during a 5 p.m. reception at the Standard Club, Chicago.

The LTF was incorporated by the Illinois State Bar Association and Chicago Bar Association on Jan. 3, 1983, and the use of interest on lawyers' trust accounts (IOLTA) was authorized April 29, 1983, by the Illinois Supreme Court.

In 1987, Illinois became the 11th state to make participation by attorneys mandatory, and in 2005, the court added $42 for legal aid to the indigent to the annual registration fee.

In the past 25 years, the trust fund has been able to distribute more than $75 million to legal aid provider agencies throughout the state.

Chicago attorney Ruth Ann Schmitt has been executive director of the LTF since its inception. She has served on the ISBA Assembly and several committees.
