Maloney to be posthumous general practice honoree

Former Princeton attorney Matthew Alexander Maloney, who died Dec. 25, 2007, at age 62 has been named the posthumous recipient of the General Practice Tradition of Excellence Award.

A member of the ISBA  General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section Council since 1995, and its chair in 2006-07, Maloney served on the Assembly from 1996 to 1999.

Bureau County public defender from 1982 to 1992, he asked the ISBA Board of Governors in 1991 to support his attempt to obtain adequate funding from the county board as required by statute.

Then a member of the Criminal Justice Section Council, he chaired the Special Committee on Public Defender's Office from 1996 to 1999. He served on the Committee on Legislation from 1995 until his death.

A 1973 graduate of the St. Louis University Law School who had a master's degree in history, Maloney was a partner in Pierson, Maloney & Rayfield and a resident of Wyanet.

He served on the boards of the Illinois Public Defender Association and Illinois Attorneys for Criminal Justice. He was advocacy vice chair of the Criminal Law Committee of the American Bar Association Section of General Practice in 1994-95.

In its recommendation of Maloney for the Tradition of Excellence Award, the General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section Council said he embodied what the award represents: excellence, general practice, and small firm practice.

"Matt exhibited passion, zealous advocacy and personal service to the profession and to the bar," said section council vice chair Julie Ann Sebastian.

"He worked his entire life as an Illinois lawyer and gave generously of his time to the ISBA, among other bar associations," she added, noting Maloney's contributions to the success of the annual Solo and Small Firm Conference.
