Thomas Kilbride is honored by John MarshallJustice Thomas L. Kilbride of the Illinois Supreme Court was unable to receive his 2008 Freedom Award from The John Marshall Law School Alumni Association on May 2 in Chicago, where he was to be keynote speaker. He was hospitalized overnight May 1 for tests but was back at work that weekend. A member of the court since 2000, Justice Kilbride practiced in Rock Island for almost 20 years. A longtime pro bono lawyer and legal advisor to the Community Caring Conference and the Quad City Harvest, he was a member of the Rock Island Human Relations Commission. He is a past president of the Illinois Township Attorneys Association. The John Marshall alumni also presented six Distinguished Service Awards. Recipients include Cook County Judge Dennis J. Burke, a past president of the Illinois Bar Foundation and former member of the ISBA Board of Governors. ISBA board member Anita DeCarlo of Cullen, Haskins, Nicholson & Menchetti, Chicago, and Joseph R. Marconi of Johnson & Bell, Chicago, general counsel to the ISBA Mutual Insurance Co., also received the award. Others are Susann MacLachlan, associate director of the law school's Center for Advocacy and Dispute Resolution; Bruce Meckler of Meckler, Bulger & Tilson, Chicago, and Cook County Judge Stanley Sacks. A Spirit of John Marshall Award was presented to George and Lee Sprague of Boston, who have given $25,000 each year for the past decade to the Lucy Sprague Public Service Scholarship. Named for their daughter, a former John Marshall student who died in 1996, the scholarship goes to a graduate who will begin public interest law work. |
