Jackson County Public Defender

Public Defender: This position will be responsible for operations of the Public Defender's Office. The position will be a part-time position (80% time) with benefits including retirement and health insurance. Salary for the position will be $80,000.00 per year. Applicants must be licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois and reside in Jackson County or a county immediately adjacent to Jackson County. Criminal and juvenile practice will be prohibited outside of the contract. The Public Defender is responsible for the staffing and administration of the Office pursuant to 55 ILCS 5/3-4008. In addition to the Public Defender, the office will have two full time attorneys. The office will be responsible for representing persons charged with felonies and traffic violations.

Contract Attorneys – Jackson County, illinois

Appointed Counsel 1: This position can either be a lawyer or a law firm. This position will represent all persons charged solely with a misdemeanor. This position will also be appointed to represent indigent parents in juvenile cases and will be the conflict attorney for the minor if not representing a parent in the case. This position will be the second conflict choice for felony cases. This will be an independent contractor position. No benefits, no staff and no office will be provided.  Should a case require an extraordinary expense, a request for the incursion of such expense must be filed with the Court before it is incurred. Salary for the position will be $67,500.00 per year.  Criminal and juvenile practice will be prohibited outside of the contract. Applicants must be licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois and maintain an office in Jackson County.

Appointed Counsel 2: This position can either be a lawyer or a law firm.  This position will be appointed to represent minors in delinquency cases and will be the conflict attorney for a parent of the minor if not representing a minor in the case.  This position will be the first conflict choice for felony cases. This will be an independent contractor position.  No benefits, no staff and no office will be provided.  Should a case require an extraordinary expense, a request for the incursion of such expense must be filed with the Court before it is incurred. Salary for the position will be $55,000.00 per year. Criminal and juvenile practice will be prohibited outside of the contract. Applicants must be licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois and maintain an office in Jackson County.
