ISBA Young Lawyers Division to host Day at the Races

The Illinois State Bar Assocation's Young Lawyers Division will host a "Day at the Races" on Sept. 26 to benefit the Children's Assistance Program. This event will take place from noon-6 p.m. at Arlington Park Racecourse, Marquee Tent 3 in the Miller Lite Party Deck in Arlingon Heights. Tickets will be available at 11:30 a.m. at the Grandstand Entrance at the Will Call window. The cost is $60 per person and includes admission, daily racing guide, private party deck, soft drinks, beer, wine and appetizers from 12:30-6 p.m. The deadline is Sept. 15 and space is limited. Illinois Judges Foundation to hold "Batter Up for Justice" benefit for judicial internships

A benefit to support a summer judicial internship program for qualified law students will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, by the Lawyer's Auxiliary Committee of the Illinois Judges Foundation. The Foundation fund-raiser "Batter Up for Justice" will take place at the Lakeview Baseball Club, 3633 N. Sheffield. It will begin at 11:05 a.m., one hour before the Chicago Cubs take on the Cincinnati Reds. The admission fee of $150 per person includes admission and an open bar throughout the game. A portion of each contribution is tax-deductible.

John O’Brien, newly-installed president of the Illinois State Bar Association, will be trotted up to the Arlington Park Racetrack in Arlington Heights this Friday, July 24, for a fete hosted jointly by the Illinois Real Estate Lawyers Association (IRELA) and Northwest Suburban Bar Association (NWSBA) in celebration of his new post.  O’Brien was a founder of IRELA and serves as its board chair, and he is a long-time active member of the NWSBA. The sixth race will be called “The Flyin’ O’Brien,” and Johnny O will have his picture taken in the Winner’s Circle with the winning horse.  Reception is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., with the first race starting at 2:30 p.m.  The event will be held at the racetrack’s Million Room, 4th floor.  Cost to attend is $35 which includes admission to the track, program, hors d’oeuvres and open bar.  For reservations, call (847) 221-2601.

Women's Bar Association to raise funds at Race Judicata 2009 Sprint for Justice

Join Team WBAI on Thursday, July 30, at 6:30 p.m. for the Race Judicata 2009 Sprint for Justice 5K Run/Walk to benefit the programs of the Chicago Volunteer Legal Services Foundation. This race event begins at Upper Hutchinson Field at Columbus & Balbo in Grant Park and loops participants along Lake Michigan and back, where they are greeted by a band and complimentary beer, wine and snacks. The Winnebago County Bar Association will hold its 64th Annual Clambake on July 31 at the Macktown Forest Preserve, 12 miles north of Rockford on Route 2. Panel of experts recap 2008-2009 Supreme Court term

The American Constitution Society held its "Sixth Annual Supreme Court Term in Review" Thursday afternoon at Mayer Brown LLP, 71 S. Wacker, Chicago. The panel consisted of Jeffrey W. Sarles, Partner, Mayer Brown; Gary Feinerman, Partner, Sidley Austin LLP and former Solicitor General of Illinois; Colleen Connell, Executive Director of the ACLU of Illinois; and Steven J. Heyman, Professor, Chicago-Kent College of Law. The panel was moderated by Steve Sanders, an Associate at Mayor Brown.
