Celebrating the Lincoln Bicentennial: Lincoln, The Illinois Lawyer and Great Communicator
These sessions will be open to all lawyers and judges attending the meeting.
The Illinois Judges Association, along with SCRIBES – The American Society of Legal Writers and the Illinois State Bar Association, will feature aspects of Lincoln’s legal career and communication skills during this morning educational program.
This program will be moderated by Hon. Mary Jane Theis, Justice Illinois Appellate Court, First District. Presenters at the educational sessions will include: Daniel Stowell, Director and Editor, and John Lupton, Associate Director and Editor, The Papers of Abraham Lincoln Project; Mark Steiner, Professor at South Texas College of Law; and Roger Billings, Professor at Northern Kentucky College of Law. Additional panel participants include Judge John Donald O’Shea (Retired) from the 14th Judicial Circuit, Moline, IL and LTC (Retired) George Eaton, Command Historian for the U.S. Army Sustainment Command, Rock Island, IL. The presenters will discuss Lincoln’s legal career in Illinois and focus on his skills of oral and written communication.
There will also be a reenactment of a portion of the Lincoln-Douglas Debate held in Galesburg by retired Judge John Donald O’Shea and historian George Eaton.
