Taste Chicago’s Culinary Delights
Tackle a Deep Dish Pizza, Chicago-Style
The Chicago-style “deep-dish” pizza was invented at Pizzeria Uno in Chicago in 1943. True Chicago-style pizza features a buttery crust, generous amounts of cheese and chunky tomato sauce, and is eaten with a knife and fork since its thick gooeyness makes a slice of pizza larger than eight or ten inches too messy to eat with fingers! Every Chicagoan has their favorite pizzeria; among those include Lou Malnati’s, Gino’s East, Giordano’s, Connie’s, and of course, Uno’s. Be sure to test out a slice (or two or three) while in town.
Follow Your Nose to Garret’s Popcorn Shop
“A Tradition… since 1949”, the family-owned Garret’s Popcorn Shop has been making fresh, hot-air popped popcorn and enticing passerby’s on the street to stop and in and feast on caramel, cheese, and buttery popcorn. Even Oprah selected their popcorn as one of her “Favorite Things”! With four stores downtown, be sure to stop by for this wonderful treat. For more information visit http://www.garrettpopcorn.com/.
Special Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibit
“Abraham Lincoln: Self-Made in America” Bicentennial Tour
The “ABRAHAM LINCOLN: SELF-MADE IN AMERICA” BICENTENNIAL TOUR, a mobile museum exhibit, was developed by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (ALPLM) in Springfield, Illinois and will travel the United States over the next two years inspiring visitors with the story of Lincoln’s life and accomplishments. The exhibit has been scheduled by the ISBA for a stop at our Meeting and will be open to visitors from December 11th – 13th. Attendance is free of charge to attendees and their guest. The only exhibit of its type in the country, the mobile museum uses an engaging mixture of interactive elements, graphics, facsimile documents and artifacts inside a 53-foot long, double expandable trailer to commemorate the Lincoln Bicentennial.
The exhibition examines Lincoln’s life from his poor beginnings to his ascension to the presidency and his assassination. Highlights include a visual recreation of Lincoln’s 1861 Farewell Address from a train car in Springfield as he left for the White House, and the award-winning “The Civil War in Four Minutes” video presentation.
The “Self-Made in America” mobile exhibit was funded in part by a grant from the Illinois Bureau of Tourism, with corporate sponsorships being sought. It was developed by ALPLM curators and historians working in concert with Mobility Resource Associates. The exhibit debuted April 27, 2008 at the American Association of Museums Convention in Denver, and is visiting key Bicentennial events through August 2010, as well as the 2008 national political conventions, major sporting events, elementary and secondary schools, colleges, and other venues.
