David M. Hartigan 1940-2023

David Matthew Hartigan, a Man of Profound Intellect, Brilliant Wit, Noble Heart, and Absolute Integrity.

David (82) passed away peacefully, lovingly cared for by his family, on February 25, 2023, just blocks from where he grew up in Rogers Park.

The pillar and guiding light to his very close family, he is survived by Kathleen Barrett, and together they were parents of a wonderful family that brought them great joy and pride; five children Rachel Dewey (Chauncey), David L. Hartigan, Peter Hartigan (Vanessa), Alexander Hartigan, Andrew Hartigan (Aimee), and eleven grandchildren Chauncey III, Oliver, Catherine D., David M. II, Margaret, Rohan, Madeline, Alexander II, Michael, Luke, and Catherine H.

David is a graduate of Georgetown University where he majored in History, a passion that continued through his life. He also graduated with a Juris Doctor from Loyola University Law School.

The depth and breadth of his professional career was astounding. After graduating from Loyola, he joined the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission as a trial lawyer investigating securities fraud until his appointment to the United States Attorney's Office.

As Assistant U.S. Attorney, Northern District of Illinois, David served as the Chief of the Tax Division, Deputy Chief of the Civil Division, and litigator in the Criminal Division. He uniquely served on a bi-partisan basis under four U.S Attorneys Bauer, Hanrahan, Foran, and Thompson.

In the private sector, David was a founding partner of Hartigan & Ward. Later, he became a partner at Wilson & Mcilvaine and Altheimer & Gray.

Furthermore, he served in several consulting and board level roles in politics, law, and nonprofit sectors:

Catholic Conference of Illinois, Legislative Counsel, representing Cardinals Cody & Bernardin and the Catholic Bishops of Illinois

Hotel Employee and Restaurant Employee International Union (HERE), Trustee & Chairman of the Finance Investment Committee with over 250,000 employees

ARDC - Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission, Chairman appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court for over 10 years

Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago, Chairman for over 10 years

Federal Bar Association, President Chicago Chapter

Goodman Theater, Board of Trustees

Shakespeare Marionette Company, Board Member

Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, Trustee

But more than anything else, his expansive love extended to the entire Hartigan Clan, his nephews and nieces, John Hartigan (Maureen), Elizabeth Connelly (Matt), Laura Jenkins (Jeff), Cristina Soeiro (Stephen Collins), David Soeiro, Aileen Caffrey (Henry), Andrew Furlong, and Johnna Hirsch (Brent). And he leaves his older brother Hon. Neil F. Hartigan (MaryLou), sisters Mary Soeiro (Raul), and Coletta "Itti" Furlong (John). He was preceded in death by his parents. Coletta and David Hartigan and his sister Aileen.

Friends - when you were a friend of David, you were a friend for life. He always put others first and had an uncanny way of knowing who needed his love and support the most. David will be deeply missed.
