Biography

Kevin K. McCormick is the founder of McCormick Law and a partner with SDHMR Law Group, LLP. He serves as outside general counsel to businesses of all sizes, helping clients address the legal issues that arise at every stage of a company’s life—from formation and growth to major transactions, disputes, and ownership transitions.

For many of his business clients, Kevin is the first call when a decision, opportunity, or unexpected problem has legal consequences. His outside general counsel practice includes business formation and governance, contract drafting and negotiation, employment matters, intellectual property, commercial real estate and leasing, manufacturing and distribution agreements, and mergers and acquisitions. He works closely with owners and executives to understand not only the immediate legal question, but also the business objectives, relationships, and practical risks surrounding it.

Kevin also maintains an extensive litigation practice in state and federal courts. He represents businesses and individuals in contract disputes, fraud and business-tort claims, partnership and ownership disputes, fiduciary-duty claims, intellectual-property matters, commercial real-estate and construction disputes, insurance-coverage matters, and other complex civil litigation. His transactional experience informs how he litigates, while his courtroom experience gives him a practical understanding of how contracts, business structures, and commercial relationships perform when tested.

Kevin’s approach to practicing law is straightforward: lawyers should solve problems, not make them appear mysterious. Legal issues rarely arrive neatly labeled by practice area. They arrive as real problems affecting a client’s business, property, finances, or future. Kevin’s role is to understand the problem, explain the available choices in plain language, assess the cost and risk of each option, and help the client move toward a practical result. Sometimes that means structuring a transaction or negotiating a solution; other times, it means litigating aggressively.

Although the practice is business-focused, Kevin also assists individuals with real-estate matters, estate planning, and significant civil disputes. When a matter falls outside his practice, he uses his relationships with other attorneys to help connect the client with an appropriate resource. He welcomes referrals and collaboration from other lawyers, whether a client needs assistance with a discrete matter, ongoing outside general counsel, local counsel, or representation in litigation.

Kevin is admitted to practice in Illinois and Indiana; the United States District Courts for the Northern District of Illinois and the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana; and the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan.
