Defendant was found guilty of filing false tax returns, structuring cash deposits to avoid detection, and concealing material information from the federal government in connection with his misuse of his position as a special agent with the Department of Homeland Security. On appeal, defendant argued that there was insufficient evidence to support his conviction. The Seventh Circuit disagreed and affirmed, finding that the evidence presented at trial was sufficient to support defendant’s conviction where the government offered sufficient evidence of its reasonable investigation into gifts of cash and coin received by the defendant and where the evidence established defendant’s knowledge of money laundering techniques.
