Illinois Appellate Court
Civil Court
Termination of Parental Rights
Court terminated parental rights of Respondent mother to her 4 children. Even at critical stages in termination of parental rights (TPR) proceedings, the right to be physically present is not absolute. Respondent's statutory rights were not violated when the TPR trial was held via Zoom. Court did not abuse its discretion in denying Respondent's motion for a continuance to sometime in the future when in-person hearings can be conducted with certainty that the COVID-19 virus will not be spread. The inference can be drawn the court was and is concerned about the spread of the virus to vulnerable persons, including Respondent's children, who are not old enough to receive the vaccine.
