Civil Court
Personal Jurisdiction
Insurer filed complaint alleging that roof of a Michigan warehouse had collapsed, causing destruction of goods owned by its insured. Defendant is incorporated in and has its principal place of business in Indiana. Although Plaintiff established that Defendant does business in Illinois through Joliet warehouse, this fact falls far short of showing that Illinois is a "surrogate home" for it. Thus, jurisdiction over Defendant is not authorized under subsection (c ) of Illinois long-arm statute. A foreign corporation does not necessarily subject itself to Illinois jurisdiction by virtue of registering to do business in Illinois, or by having a registered agent in Illinois.(KARMEIER, FREEMAN, THOMAS, KILBRIDE, GRAMAN, and THEIS, concurring).
