Plaintiff filed a lawsuit alleging that police officers detained him in violation of the Fourth Amendment, coerced a confession in violation of the Fifth Amendment, and destroyed and fabricated evidence in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment. The district court denied the officers’ motion for summary judgment and they appealed. The Seventh Circuit reversed, finding that the officers were entitled to qualified immunity where they had arguable probable cause to detain plaintiff and where no facts showing that there was missing or destroyed evidence or that they destroyed it in bad faith and that no clearly established law showed that their interrogation tactics were beyond a doubt illegal.
