Illinois Appellate Court
Civil Court
Jurisdiction
Company filed breach of contract action against entertainment promoter, a resident of Connecticut, as to event to be performed in Illinois. Parties had no written contract for Illinois event. Illinois courts cannot exercise general jurisdiction over Defendant, as he does not transact business in Illinois, has no offices, employees, or sales activities in Illinois, his business in Illinois does not have fair measure of continuity or permanency, and he has not engaged in continuous and systematic business contacts in Illinois. Plaintiff failed to establish that cause of action arose out of Defendant's contact with Illinois; thus, specific personal jurisdiction cannot be exercised over Defendant, as Defendant does not have sufficient minimum contacts with Illinois to reasonably anticipate being hailed into Illinois court. (J. GORDON and HOWSE, concurring.)
