Involuntary Administration of Medication
Court properly authorized involuntary administration of psychotropic medication to Respondent, age 30, with 12-year history of mental illness and diagnosis of bipolar disorder with psychosis. Treating psychiatrist's testimony as to purpose of each drug, comparison of side effects of various mood stabilizers, and Respondent's pretreatment condition illuminated need to effectuate specific treatment purposes, and satisfied standards for evidence of benefits of each drug. (HUTCHINSON and SCHOSTOK, concurring.)
