Defendant was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder under a felony murder theory and was sentenced to an extended-term sentence of 82 years in prison. The appellate court reversed and remanded for a new trial on the basis of two independent grounds: (1) the trial court erred in defining reasonable doubt as “significant” doubt, and (2) the State elicited irrelevant and prejudicial testimony that the statute of limitations for offenses other than murder had expired.
