Defendant was convicted of first-degree murder and home invasion and was sentenced to consecutive terms of 48 years and 25 years. On direct appeal, defendant challenged the sufficiency of the evidence to support the home invasion conviction and argued that his sentence for murder was excessive because it did not take into account defendant’s youth, his supportive family, his mental health and substance abuse issues, and his rehabilitative potential. The appellate court affirmed, finding that a trier of fact could reasonably conclude beyond a reasonable doubt that defendant entered the victim’s home without authority and that there was no abuse of discretion in the court’s sentencing decision.
