Illinois Appellate Court
Criminal Court
Motion to Suppress
The State appealed from a circuit court order granting defendant’s motion to suppress inculpatory statements given during a police interrogation. The State argued on appeal that the defendant’s statements to police were voluntary. The appellate court disagreed and affirmed, finding that under the circumstances the false promises made by law enforcement to encourage the inculpatory statements rendered them involuntary.
