In 1920s Oklahoma, Native Americans were treated as second class citizens. In the book and movie, Killers of the Flower Moon, we learn the true story about how members of the Osage Tribe were cheated out of their wealth and murdered for their oil rights. Don’t miss this interactive presentation in which our speaker, Philip Bogdanoff, uses film clips from the movie to discuss the various laws that discriminated against the Osage Tribe and how William Hale schemed to murder members of the tribe and steal their wealth. Learn how attorneys today can help prevent bias and discrimination in the legal profession by examining what the attorneys in the 1920s did to fight the racial persecution of the Osage Tribe and aided in the conviction of Mr. Hale for murder.

About the Speaker: Philip Bogdanoff is a nationally recognized continuing legal education speaker. Previously, he served as an assistant prosecutor in Akron, Ohio for nearly thirty years. He worked closely with the police and often made charging decisions on long term investigations. Mr. Bogdanoff also argued cases before the Ohio Ninth District Court of Appeals and the Ohio Supreme Court before retiring as a senior assistant prosecutor. He still works as a special prosecutor and in 2022 argued three criminal cases before the Ohio Supreme Court. Davis v. Illinois Department of Human Services

Federal 7th Circuit Court
Civil Court
Family and Medical Leave Act
Citation
Case Number:
No. 22-2118
Decision Date:
May 14, 2025
Federal District:
C.D. Ill.
Holding:
Affirmed in part, reversed in part, remanded.
Judge:
LEE

Plaintiffs filed a lawsuit against the Illinois Department of Human Services, alleging that the DHS had interfered with their FMLA-protected rights when it determined that FMLA leave did not cover pregnancy-related morning sickness. The district court dismissed one plaintiff’s claim for lack of standing and granted summary judgment in favor of the defendant on the remaining plaintiff’s claim. The Seventh Circuit affirmed in part and reversed in part, finding that the district court correctly concluded that one plaintiff had failed to establish a concrete injury-in-fact, but that there were disputes as to material fact on the remaining claim. (SCUDDER, concurring and KIRSCH, specially concurring)

Central States v. Event Media Inc.

Federal 7th Circuit Court
Civil Court
Employee Retirement Income Security Act
Citation
Case Number:
Nos. 24-1739, 24-1740, 24-1741, 24-1742
Decision Date:
April 24, 2025
Federal District:
N.D. Ill., Eastern Div.
Holding:
Affirmed.
Judge:
KIRSCH

In a case involving a narrow question but a complicated statutory analysis, the Seventh Circuit reviewed an order of the district court that interpreted statutory language concerning multi-employer pension plans. The parties to the case, which included contributing employers to a pension fund disagreed over how to calculate withdrawal liability obligations. The district court concluded that under the language of 29 U.S.C. § 1085(g)(3), the employers’ post-2014 contribution rate increases should be excluded from the calculation. The Seventh Circuit affirmed, describing the district court’s opinion as well-reasoned despite the complexity of the question. (LEE and KOLAR, concurring)
