CLE: The Legislative Process in Illinois

Don’t miss this online presentation that’s designed to give attorneys with little or no experience with the General Assembly an introductory look at how the legislative process works.

Attorneys with basic practice experience who attend this seminar will better understand: the constitutional and statutory requirements for passing legislation; the legislative process affecting substantive family law, guardianships, juvenile justice, and education, as well as an overview of the appropriations process; how major issues are handled in the legislative process, such as the clean energy bill that was recently signed by the Governor; the role of lobbyists and how they affect legislation; the role of the House and Senate leadership; the political considerations in determining what key substantive issues are considered; how to negotiate effectively on important issues; what to expect in the coming year; what to do when your client’s issues involve the need for legislation; and the importance of State rulemaking in Illinois and how that process works. The program closes with a brief demonstration of how to effectively use the General Assembly’s webpage.
