R. Ryan Stoll 1964-2021

R. Ryan Stoll, 57, died unexpectedly on December 20, 2021, from an accident in the Grand Canyon. Ryan was born September 3, 1964, in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Ralph W. Stoll, M.D. and Sally Schrader Stoll. Ryan passed in a place that he loved doing what he loved.

Ryan graduated from Lake Forest High School in 1982 with his future wife, Cilla Walmsley. He attended Stanford University where he ran both Track and Cross Country. Ryan graduated with a B.A. and a Masters in 1987. He then attended Harvard Law School and received his J.D. in 1990.

Ryan and Cilla were married in 1989 and following Law School, they traveled to Seattle, Washington for Ryan's Federal Clerkship after which they returned to Chicago where he became an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Criminal Division. Ryan then completed his career as a Partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom, LLP.

One quality that Ryan possessed in abundance was his modesty. He was always the first to champion and recognize others' achievements while downplaying or never mentioning his own. However, we feel he will forgive us for listing a few of his many varied and wide-reaching accomplishments. Phi Beta Kappa, Editor of the Harvard Law Review, Federal Clerkship, many races including the National Ironman World Championship in Kona.

Ryan retired in 2019 and was enjoying his retirement hiking, biking, playing golf, running, and spending time with his wife, Cilla, of 32 years, and their three beautiful children: Kelsey (28), Drew (26) and Maggie (22). He loved both the grit and the beauty in nature and was a passionate outdoorsman. He instilled in his family and children a love and respect for nature through years of family trips: hut to hut hiking in Austria as a family, summiting Mt. Blanc with his youngest daughter, Maggie, and most recently backpacking in Denali National Park with Kelsey and Drew.

Ryan is survived by his loving wife, Cilla, Kelsey, Drew and Maggie; his sisters: Nancy Stoll Bass and Tisha Stoll Colvin, their families and his parents: Ralph and Sally Stoll.
