Illinois Supreme Court to Swear-In New Attorneys at Virtual Bar Admission Ceremony

The bar admission ceremony for the 309 new attorneys who passed the February 2023 Bar Exam and three other admittees will be held online on Monday, May 8, at 1:30 p.m.

Chief Justice Mary Jane Theis will preside over the ceremony and administer the oath to the new admittees. Justice Lisa Holder White will make the motion to admit the class and Justice Joy V. Cunningham will second the motion.

“On behalf of my colleagues, I would like to congratulate the new admittees on passing the bar exam and becoming attorneys,” Chief Justice Theis said. “We welcome you to the legal profession and urge you to remember the oath you will be taking to support the Illinois and U.S. Constitutions.”

All of the candidates set to be sworn in have passed a bar examination and a required ethics examination and were certified by the Supreme Court Committee on Character and Fitness.

The number of admittees for each district is as follows:

•    First District: 239
•    Second District: 22
•    Third District: 31
•    Fourth District: 9
•    Fifth District: 11

The new attorneys sworn in at the bar admission ceremony will bring the total number of licensed attorneys in Illinois to approximately 96,000.

Congratulation to all of those who will be admitted to the Illinois Bar.

It is truly shameful that the ceremony will be virtual.

The profession is doing itself, the public at large and the legal system as a whole a terrible disservice by traveling so far down this virtual road.

I agree with Mr. Laughlin.
