Illinois Supreme Court Appoints John Carroll as Judge in Third Subcircuit of Cook County

Justice Joy V. Cunningham and the Illinois Supreme Court have announced the appointment of John P. Carroll Jr., as a judge in the Third Subcircuit of the Circuit Court of Cook County.

Mr. Carroll is being appointed to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Thomas W. Murphy. Mr. Carroll’s appointment is effective May 23, 2025, and will conclude on December 7, 2026.

Mr. Carroll most recently served for six years as Deputy Chief of Staff in the Office of the Illinois Attorney General with a focus on projects involving policy, legislation, litigation, outreach, and advocacy. He previously spent 19 years as an Assistant State’s Attorney in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office where he prosecuted cases in the Felony Trial, Sex Crimes, Narcotics and Special Prosecutions divisions and for the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Mr. Caroll earned his Bachelor of Science from John Carroll University and earned his Juris Doctor from the Loyola University School of Law.

His professional affiliations include the Chicago Bar Association, where he serves on the Judicial Screening Committee, the Loyola Academy Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, and the Prosecutors Bar Association.
