ISBA Warns Members of Ongoing Phishing Scam Impersonating ISBA Secretary

The Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) is warning members about a phishing scam involving fraudulent emails that appear to come from Secretary Emily N. Masalski.

The scam email, which has been reported by multiple members, is designed to look like an official communication from the ISBA. It uses a deceptive email address — emily.masalski2@ isba.org.virrumail.com — that is not affiliated with the ISBA.

The message claims to be about confirming preferences for secure communication and references a supposed request from “the Illinois State Bar Association.” It may appear legitimate at first glance, but it is not from Ms. Masalski or any ISBA staff.

It is a scam.

Members should not respond to the message, click on any links, or provide personal information.

The ISBA does not use third-party services like “Virumail” for secure communications and will never request sensitive information in this manner.

Lawyers are always advised to keep their guard up as scammers become increasingly clever in their quest to do harm.
