The York Community High School mock trial team.
The 2019 ISBA High School Mock Trial Invitational took place on March 9-10 at the University of Illinois Springfield. First place went to York Community High School from Elmhurst.
Second place went to Glenbard East High School from Lombard, and Evanston Township High School received third place.

Lamont Lee Perington, 77, of Maple Park, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019, at Season’s Hospice in Naperville.
He was born Feb. 9, 1942, in Waukegan, the son of Philip and Marguerite Perington. Lee is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara (Rossman); daughter, Joy (Michael) Miletic of North Aurora; grandchildren, Amanda and Noah Miletic; sister, Lorraine McDowell of Winthrop Harbor; sister-in-law, Mildred Perington of Johnstown, Iowa; and many dear nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Neil, and his son Jeffrey.

Land of Lincoln Legal Aid, a non-profit organization that provides free legal services to low-income individuals in central and southern Illinois, is seeking a staff attorney at the Northern Regional Office in Springfield.
The position includes representing victims of domestic violence in a variety of matters, including but not limited to orders of protection, civil no stalking orders, and divorces. The position also includes representation of low-income persons in routine and complex housing and consumer litigation and expungement cases, as well as participation in community legal education and outreach.

Craig L. Kavensky, 61, of Rock Island, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Craig was born on Sept. 12, 1957, to Louise (Rosengard) and Harrison Kavensky. After graduating from Rock Island High School, he received a bachelor’s degree from University of Illinois, and his Juris Doctor from Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago-Kent College of Law. He was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1982 and joined his father as an attorney at one of the Quad-Cities' oldest law firms, now known as Winstein, Kavensky and Cunningham LLC.

Geoffrey L. Gifford, 72, of Chicago, died Feb. 9, 2019. He was born on Nov. 26, 1946, in Kirksville, Missouri, to Robert Marvin Gifford and Elnora Francis (Overstreet) Gifford. He lived a full life as a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
Geoff graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Missouri in 1968 and received his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1971.

The Office of the State Appellate Defender has openings for the position of assistant appellate defender in Springfield and Mt. Vernon.
The position will provide criminal appellate representation to indigent clients. Responsibilities include reading records, conducting research, drafting briefs and other documents, and presenting oral arguments.
