George W. Brannen passed away December 1, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his two stepsons, Christopher Renner and Douglas Renner. He was a loving husband and caring stepfather. George was raised in Geneva, IL, where he attended Elgin Academy and went on to graduate from Dartmouth College and Duke University Law School. After graduating from Duke, George practiced law in the Chicago area and became a well-respected trial lawyer where he handled many complicated cases in Kane, DuPage, and Cook counties. George was a tireless working and transferred that ethic to his personal life. His energy and zest for life is one of inspiration that he shared with his family and friends. George loved traveling with the family, sports, reading and fun times with everyone, including strangers. George will always be remembered for his perseverance and will to live. He beat the odds with multiple health issues dating back to his battle with stage 4 cancer when he was 23. We feel so blessed that George had the strength and courage to fight through these ailments to share his life with us. He was truly a unique and remarkable person and will be missed, remembered and loved forever.

The Supreme Court of Illinois has extended the Jan. 1, 2018, deadline to implement mandatory e-filing for all civil cases for Cook and Winnebago Counties. The request for an extension by Greene County was denied.
The Circuit Court of Cook County will have six more months to prepare for mandatory electronic filing, according to an Illinois Supreme Court order issued Friday, Dec. 22, 2017. Through June 30, the county is allowed to continue permissive e-filing with a commitment to complete the full case management system integration by April 1. By May 1, Cook County must permit filings for all civil case types to be made on eFileIL. Read the order on the Illinois Courts website to see the full list of conditions.
This extension comes after a request early last month from Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown to push back the start date a full year, stating that the county's vendor, Tyler Technologies, could not fully meet the deadline. The Circuit Clerk's office will work with Tyler to meet the extended deadline, including the testing of essential functionality.

In the spring, members of the ISBA will elect a third vice president, six seats on the Board of Governors, and 22 seats on the Cook County Assembly.
One board seat is open in each of the following Areas: Cook County, Board Area 1 (circuit 18), Board Area 3 (Circuits 12, 13, 16, 21 and 23), Board Area 4 (circuits 10, 14, and 15), Board Area 6 (circuits 7, 8 and 9), and Board Area 8 (circuits 3 and 20).
Nominating petitions are now being accepted and must be filed by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at either the Illinois Bar Center, 424 South 2nd Street, in Springfield, or the ISBA Office at 20 S. Clark Street, 9th Floor, Chicago.
Petitions must be physically submitted with original signatures. Petitions submitted via email or fax will not be accepted.
Candidates should submit their biography and photo online.
Questions regarding the filing of petitions should be directed to Kim Weaver, assistant to the executive director.

The ISBA Springfield and Chicago offices will be closed for the holidays beginning tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 22. They will reopen on Jan. 2, 2018. During this time, members can expect the following:

Norbert L. Gold, age 93, of Winnetka died peacefully at Evanston Hospital surrounded by his loving family. A diabetic for 77 years, he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 16. His doctors did not think he would live past the age of 30, but he mastered his health by watching his diet and taking his insulin as directed. His health was a challenge in his later years, but he was grateful to the Winnetka Paramedics for always saving his life. In 2004, Eli Lilly honored him with a special recognition for being a diabetic for over 70 years on insulin therapy.
He graduated from Northwestern University, majoring in English & History, and then received his law degree from John Marshall Law School. He had a long and successful career as an attorney and a real estate appraiser. He worked as an attorney for the Illinois Highway Dept., purchasing farmland for the construction of Highway I-55. He then joined Litton Industries as an attorney and director where he purchased and sold over 100 properties in the Midwest area. While practicing law, he established his own real estate appraisal and brokerage firm where he appraised over 20,000 properties in Chicago, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana, Ohio, L.A., and for many banks in the Chicagoland area. He served as an expert witness on property values in Lake and Cook County Courts and Federal Bankruptcy Courts.

President Russell W. Hartigan received the Light of Truth Award from the Decalogue Society of Lawyers on Thursday, Dec. 14, at the organization's annual Chanukah party in Chicago. In accepting his award, Hartigan lit a candle and provided remarks. The award was presented by the Decalogue Society of Lawyers President Mitchell Goldberg.
Other award recipients include Hon. Kim Foxx, Cook County state's attorney; Hon. Tommy Brewer, Sixth Municipal District judge; and Rabbi Andrea London, Beth Emet Synaogue.
The Decalogue Society of Lawyers is an association of attorneys of the Jewish faith. It has supported Jewish lawyers and the legal community in Chicago and throughout Illinois for over 80 years.

James E. Chadd was appointed to the Office of the State Appellate Defender by the Illinois Supreme Court on Thursday, Dec. 14. Chadd's four-year term as state appellate defender will begin Jan. 1, 2018. He succeeds Michael Pelletier, who was appointed in 2007 and will be retiring at the end of the year.
Chadd has worked for the Office of the State Appellate Defender for over 33 years, where he has been deputy state appellate defender for four years. In this role, he was responsible for monitoring the legal work of the agency and reviewing agency briefs filed in the Illinois Supreme Court.
He was selected by a screening committee, which was appointed by the supreme court in September and was directed to make a public announcement of the vacancy and invite applications.
Chadd first started with the Office of the State Appellate Defender in 1984, as an assistant defender in the Supreme Court Unit in 1984. In 1989, he moved to the First District Office and in 1995 served as team leader in addition to his assistant defender duties. He became supervisor for the First District Office in 2002 and served as assistant deputy defender before becoming deputy state appellate defender.
He earned his B.A. at the University of Oregon and his J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law.
