ISBA President Bridget Duignan appointed Arlette Porter to the underrepresented seat on the Board of Governors on June 5, 2025. She will serve a three-year term. Porter is an active ISBA member and member of the Family Law Section Council for 20 years.

The ISBA’s Rural Practice Initiative Committee created the Rural Practice Fellowship Program in 2020 to increase access to attorneys in rural areas of Illinois. The aim of the Program is to connect rural and small-town attorneys and law firms looking to hire summer law clerks and full-time associates with law students and attorneys interested in practicing law in rural communities in Illinois.

The Illinois State Bar Association’s Lawyer Finder Service provides referrals to local lawyers Mondays through Fridays. The Service makes referrals in a number of areas of law. For the month of July, 2025, the ISBA helped 1,545 people in need of legal services find lawyers.

During Member Appreciation Month this past May, we asked members of the ISBA to submit a photo along with a 100-word caption describing a prized possession or memento on their desk, bookshelf, or hanging on a wall. The winner received a $100 Visa gift card and the opportunity to be published in the August issue of the Illinois Bar Journal.
Responses ranged from sentimental family heirlooms, to everyday necessities, to one-of-a-kind oddities.

The goal of the ISBA Rural Practice Fellowship Program is to place summer law clerks and associate attorneys with firms in rural areas and small towns across the state. Through the program, summer clerks are awarded a stipend of $5,000 and associate attorneys are awarded a stipend of $10,000 ($5,000 paid initially; $5,000 paid after the associate attorney completes one year of rural practice). These stipends are made possible through the generous support of not only the ISBA, but also the ISBA Mutual Insurance Company and individual donors.

The Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) is warning members about a phishing scam involving fraudulent emails that appear to come from Secretary Emily N. Masalski.
The scam email, which has been reported by multiple members, is designed to look like an official communication from the ISBA. It uses a deceptive email address — emily.masalski2@ isba.org.virrumail.com — that is not affiliated with the ISBA.
