    Nominate Someone Who Makes A Difference Through Pro Bono and Volunteer Services

    In Illinois – and across the country – the demand for legal services for low-income individuals and families far exceeds the supply. But individual attorneys, legal aid organizations, law firms, corporate law departments, and bar associations across the state are working to close the gap or mitigate its effects through pro bono and volunteer service.

    File Your Nominating Petitions for ISBA Election by Tomorrow

    The deadline to submit nominating petitions for the ISBA election is tomorrow, Wednesday Jan. 31, at 4:30 p.m. at either the Illinois Bar Center, 424 South 2nd Street, in Springfield, or the ISBA Office at 20 S. Clark Street, 9th Floor, Chicago.

    Members of the ISBA will elect a third vice president, six seats on the Board of Governors, and 22 seats on the Assembly in Cook County this spring.

    Nomination Deadline for ISBA Awards Is March 2

    Every year, the Illinois State Bar Association presents awards to recognize individuals for their commitment and service to the profession, their communities, and the association. Award recipients are selected through a nomination process, and members are encouraged to nominate persons who meet the criteria for each award. Please submit the online nomination form, available following the links below, for the following awards no later than March 2.

    Volunteer for the 2018 High School Mock Trial Invitational

    Volunteers are needed for the 2018 ISBA High School Mock Trial Invitational, which is co-administered by the ISBA and the Illinois Trial Team of the University of Illinois. It will be held at the University of Illinois College of Law in Champaign on March 24-25.

     

    This program provides an opportunity for students to learn what it is like to prepare and present a legal case before the Illinois Courts. Participating students gain a better understanding of the justice system and improve their knowledge, skills, and ability to articulate in a reasoned, thoughtful manner.

    Updated Illinois Rules of Evidence Package Now Available

    The fully updated Illinois Rules of Evidence: A Color-Coded Guide and pocket-sized Illinois Rules of Evidence are now available for purchase. These reference guides reflect all rule changes through Jan. 1, 2018. The guide, authored by former appellate justice Gino L. DiVito, includes a color-coded reference guide, insightful commentary, and side-by-side comparison of the Federal Rules of Evidence and the Illinois Rules of Evidence.

    ISBA Seeks Managing Editor

    The Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) seeks a motivated professional to manage the production of the Illinois Bar Journal, the Association’s flagship publication. The Managing Editor will also oversee the production of ISBA section newsletters, the IBJ advertising program, and the Illinois Courts Bulletin. The Managing Editor position will preferably be based in the Springfield, Illinois headquarters of the ISBA, but candidates desiring to work in the ISBA’s Chicago Office are also invited to apply.

    Lawyer Referral Service Makes Over 575 Referrals in December

    The Illinois State Bar Association’s Lawyer Finder Service provides referrals to local lawyers Mondays through Fridays. The Service makes referrals in a number of areas of law. For the month of December 2017 there were over 575 referrals given.

    Nominating Petitions Now Being Accepted for Upcoming ISBA Election

    In the spring, members of the ISBA will elect a third vice president, six seats on the Board of Governors, and 22 seats on the Cook County Assembly.

    One board seat is open in each of the following Areas: Cook County, Board Area 1 (circuit 18), Board Area 3 (Circuits 12, 13, 16, 21 and 23), Board Area 4 (circuits 10, 14, and 15), Board Area 6 (circuits 7, 8 and 9), and Board Area 8 (circuits 3 and 20).  

    Nominating petitions are now being accepted and must be filed by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at either the Illinois Bar Center, 424 South 2nd Street, in Springfield, or the ISBA Office at 20 S. Clark Street, 9th Floor, Chicago.

    Petitions must be physically submitted with original signatures. Petitions submitted via email or fax will not be accepted.

    Candidates should submit their biography and photo online.

    Questions regarding the filing of petitions should be directed to Kim Weaver, assistant to the executive director.

    ISBA Offices Closing for Holidays

    The ISBA Springfield and Chicago offices will be closed for the holidays beginning tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 22. They will reopen on Jan. 2, 2018. During this time, members can expect the following:

    All business and e-newsletter distribution will resume as usual on Jan. 2, 2018.

    On behalf of everyone at the ISBA, we wish you a happy holiday season and best wishes in the new year.

    Temporary ISBA Service Interruption Scheduled on Dec. 29-30

    All ISBA systems will be down due to electrical work beginning Friday, Dec. 29 at 8 a.m. until Saturday, Dec. 30 at 12 p.m. (noon). During this time the ISBA website will not be available. As a result you will also not be able to log into Fastcase, online CLE, and ISBA Central. Here is what you need to know and steps you can take to ensure continued service.

    Online CLE

    You will not be able to access online CLE at all during the outage. If you need to complete CLE credit before the end of the year, we strongly urge you to plan to finalize that before the outage. 

    ISBA Central Communities and Discussion Groups

    Discussion groups will still be available via email, but you will not be able to log into ISBA Central. (Note: if you are already logged into the ISBA website, you may be able to access ISBA Central by going to it directly at http://central.isba.org).

    Fastcase

    For members who need to access Fastcase during this time, please follow the instructions below.
