    James Brooks Kinzer 1924-2016

    James Brooks Kinzer, age 92 - husband of the late Vaida; responsible and caring father of his children Jamie of Los Angeles; James Brooks (Margaret Morris), a Circuit Court judge in Watseka, Illinois; John Byron (Mary Kate Tobin), a physician in Lake Forest, Illinois; and twins Margaret Kirk (John Meyers) of Philadelphia, and Janet Deering (Alan Abrams), a librarian at the Library of Congress - passed away peacefully on Friday, September 2.

    Born on July 10, 1924 in Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania, to James "Brooks" Kinzer and Lillian Williams, Jim is best remembered as intelligent, resourceful, and truly one-of-a kind, not to mention a "character" by those who knew him well. His final years were spent in Lake Bluff where he became known simply as "granddad" to his family and the community. Jim could often be seen whipping around in his motor scooter at the age of 85. An adventurist, Jim's best known phrase, "Ain't life grand," was indicative of his enthusiastic love and curiosity for the natural world.

    Charl Kenneth Stowe 1951-2016

    Charl Kenneth Stowe, age 64 of Greenville, passed away 11:11 p.m. Friday, August 12, 2016 in Good Samaritan Hospital, Mt. Vernon, Illinois.

    Charl Kenneth, the son of Carl Henry and June Wood Stowe, was born October 4, 1951. He lived in Greenville and is survived by his siblings: Marilyn Stowe, Rus-Daniella Weissman and husband Rabbi Abe, and Dr. Charlotte Rosenak. Charl was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Ben Stowe in 2001.

    Services have been held. Memorials may be made to Call To Greatness ministry or Bond County Humane Society.

    Glorioso appointed as Chairman of the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board

    Governor Bruce Rauner has appointed ISBA member Mauro Glorioso to be the new Chairman of the State of Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board (PTAB).
    Glorioso has been a member of the statewide five member board for eight years and was recently appointed its Chairman. Board members are appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the Senate. The Senate confirmed Glorioso’s appointment by a vote of 52-0.

    “I am honored by Governor Rauner’s confidence in me to serve the Citizens of the State of Illinois as the Chairman of the PTAB," Glorioso said. "The PTAB exists to insure that the Taxpayers of the State have an avenue of relief to make certain that their real property assessments are fair and uniform.”

    The PTAB provides that taxpayer service through the Administrative Law Process and does not charge to file cases at its offices. Cases are then assigned to administrative law judges (ALJ) to be heard and considered. A written decision is prepared which is reviewed by the board. The Board’s charge is to determine the correct assessed value of the property under consideration. It does not determine tax bills. Appeals can be made to the PTAB only after a board of review determination from any county in Illinois. Prior to becoming a board member, Glorioso served as an ALJ at the agency for eight years.

    William A. Schroeder 1943-2016

    Professor William A. Schroeder, 73, passed away at 6:41 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

    He was born March 19, 1943, to Arthur Carl and Rolande (Legault) Schroeder in Chicago.

    William graduated from York High School in 1961. He was a Fulbright Scholarship recipient and attended the University of Illinois where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree and Juris Doctor Degree. He then went on to earn his LLM from Harvard University. William was a member of U.S. Supreme Court in addition to multiple U.S. District Courts, U.S. Court of Appeals and many State Bars. Prior to his career in academia he practiced law in Boston, Massachusetts and Rochester, New York. Before coming to Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, where he joined the faculty in 1984, he taught at multiple universities in Boston, Missouri and Alabama. Since arriving at SIU School of Law he has been a cherished member of the community. He was an esteemed teacher and scholar, and was loved by his family, friends, colleagues, and students.

    Henry Jackson Burt Jr. 1936-2016

    Henry Jackson Burt Jr. passed away on August 25, 2016. Beloved husband of Diane "Dini" for 58 years. Loving father of Henry J. (Linda) Spring Valley, IL, Stephen M. (Emily) Glen Ellyn, IL and Cynthia Burt Lafuente. Preceded in death by his parents Henry and Yvonne and also his daughter Cynthia. Grandfather of Madeleine Burt, Claire Burt and John Burt. Fond brother of Patricia B. Tylman (Vince). Uncle of several nieces and nephews.

    Henry attended Wheaton Community High School, Yale University and Northwestern School of Law. Henry was a partner of the former law office of Rathje-Woodward-Dyer & Burt. Henry was president of the Chairmans Club of the B.R. Ryall YMCA, president of the Glen Ellyn Jaycees. Served 7 years on the Glen Ellyn Park Board and was president of the DuPage County Bar Association.

    President Cornelius to receive NIU College of Law Alumnus of the Year Award

    ISBA President Vincent F. Cornelius will receive the NIU College of Law Alumnus of the Year Award on Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 5:30-7:30 at the University Club of Chicago. Northern Illinois University College of Law Dean Eric Dannenmaier and the NIU Law Alumni Council will honor eight outstanding alumni and friends of the school during its annual awards reception.

    The 2016 award recipients were selected based on outstanding achievements in their careers, demonstrated service to the NIU College of Law or their community, and professional integrity.

    The program will feature brief remarks beginning at 6 p.m. from the award recipients.

    William L. Turner 1925-2016

    William L. Turner, 91, formerly of Shelbyville, IL., died at 1 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2016.

    Mr. Turner was born on January 19, 1925, in Cowden, IL., the son of Carl A. and Dorothea L. (Turney) Turner.

    He graduated from Herrick High School in the Class of 1942 and was a U. S. Army-Air Force veteran of WW II.

    He married Ruth I. Beck of rural Herrick on August 20, 1949, in Albany, CA.

    Mr. Turner matriculated at the University of Illinois. In 1950, he graduated from the U of I law school and was admitted to the Illinois Bar Association. Mr. Turner opened his law practice in Shelbyville in 1953. He was a member of the Herrick United Methodist Church, Herrick, IL., and was a Past Master of Jackson Masonic Lodge #53 A.F. and A.M. of Shelbyville, IL.

    He is survived by his two daughters, Elisa Anne Turner (Eric S. Smith, MD) of Coral Gables, FL.; and Susan Turner Mathew (Ivan K. Mathew) of Paradise Valley, AZ.; brother, Fred E. Turner (Mary) of Herrick, IL.; and three grandchildren: Grant Stanton Smith of Miami, FL.; Margaret Susan Smith Logan (Josh) of Miami, FL.; and Gabrielle (Abbey) Mathew of Paradise Valley, AZ.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth I. Turner on December 23, 2013; brothers, Lee Roger Turner and George A. Turner; and grandson, Marshall Mathew.

    Gary W. Klages 1957-2016

    Gary W. Klages, age 58 of Cary passed away August 30, 2016 after a long battle with cancer. A graduate of the John Marshall Law School, Klages retired in August from the Law Office of Daniel E. Goodman LLC in Rosemont.

    Klages began his career as a Sangamon County assistant state's attorney before representing defendants and plaintiffs in personal-injury litigation for several decades.

    Klages attended the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1979, he went on to attend John Marshall Law School receiving his Juris Doctorate in 1982 and was admitted to the that same year. He was a member of the Federal Bar in the Northern and Central Districts of Illinois, the Central District of Indiana, the Illinois State Bar Association and the United States Supreme Court. Gary did not just “practice law” he possessed a true love of the profession. His dedication to his clients and his commitment to serving the bar with the utmost integrity and professionalism was evident throughout his life and continued throughout his courageous five year battle with cancer.

    He is survived by his partner Charlotte Dioguardi, his children: Kyle, Kimberly, Carly and Brandon as well as a sister Lisa Klages and a brother Dan (Stacey)) Klages.

    Visitation will be held on Friday, September 2, 2016 from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Kahle-Moore Funeral Home, 403 Silver Lake Rd., Cary. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday, September 3rd at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 410 First St., Cary.

    Peter R. Sonderby 1941-2016

    Peter R. Sonderby - formerly of Chicago, and most recently residing in Grand Beach, MI and Naples, FL, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 17, 2016, after a year-long struggle with cancer. He was 75 years old.

    Peter is survived by his beloved wife of 26 years the Honorable Susan Pierson Sonderby (Ret.) of Grand Beach, MI and Naples, FL; daughter Kathleen (Richard Ross) Sonderby of Mill Valley, CA, son Christopher (Jill) Sonderby of Menlo Park, CA, and daughter Jennifer (Seth Blacher) Sonderby of San Francisco, CA; grandchildren Eliza, Lauren and Graham Ross, Max and Madeline Sonderby and Ari and Leo Blacher; brother Michael (Pam) Sonderby of Naples, FL; sister-in-law Tina Sonderby of Long Beach, IN; and nieces and nephews Brett (Lisa) Sonderby, Amy (Jeff) Kontir, Max (Glaucia) Sonderby, Elizabeth Sonderby and Robert (Carol) Sonderby. Peter was preceded in death by his parents, Max E. and Mary E. (Sjostrom) Sonderby, and his brother Stephen Sonderby.

    Hon. Leonard J. Wojtecki 1947-2016

    The Honorable Leonard J. Wojtecki, 69, grew up in Cary, IL., passed away Saturday, August 13, 2016 surrounded by his family at home. He was born July 6, 1947 in Chicago, IL. the son of Leonard and June (Larsen) Wojtecki. He was united in marriage to Frances Robertson on August 23, 1969 in Cary, IL.

    Judge Wojtecki graduated from Marquette University in 1969 and went on to earn his law degree from John Marshall Law School, Chicago, IL in 1976. Right out of law school, he joined the Cook County State's Attorney's office as a prosecutor. He then moved to private practice as a trial attorney in Aurora, IL. He also served as an assistant public defender in Kendall County before his appointment as an associate judge in the 16th Judicial Circuit in August 2000 retiring from the bench in July 2015.
