Justice Joy V. Cunningham and the Illinois Supreme Court have announced the appointment of Ginger Leigh Odom as a Judge in the First Subcircuit of the Circuit Court of Cook County.
Ms. Odom is being appointed to fill the vacancy created by the election of Justice Carl A. Walker to the First District Appellate Court. Ms. Odom’s appointment is effective June 23, 2025, and will conclude on December 7, 2026.

The Illinois Supreme Court has determined that the odor of raw cannabis, but not burnt cannabis, provides probable cause on its own to search a vehicle, notes Emily L. Fitch in her June Illinois Bar Journal article, “Sights, Smells, & Searches.” Fitch goes on to explain how the Court found “harmony” between the arguably contradictory Vehicle Code and the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act by determining that each is consistent with the requirement to store cannabis in an odor-proof container. -

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University Simmons Law School will begin a series of mobile legal clinics in the region next week to provide free, onsite assistance for senior citizens wanting to prepare health care power of attorney. The legal clinic’s Senior Summer Sessions begin Tuesday, June 10, at the Murphysboro Senior Center and will run through July 31, with site visits to each of the 13 southernmost counties the clinic serves. Participants must be age 60 or older and live within those 13 counties.
