Nancy A. Peterman Appointed to 14-Year Term as United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Northern District of Illinois

 Chief Judge Michael B. Brennan of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit is pleased to announce the appointment of Nancy A. Peterman to a 14-year term as United States Bankruptcy Judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Ms. Peterman succeeds Bankruptcy Judge Carol A. Doyle who retired in 2023. Ms. Peterman will take the oath of office and join the bankruptcy bench in Chicago on February 19, 2026.

Ms. Peterman earned her bachelor’s degree with high distinction and her law degree, cum laude, from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She began her legal career at Winston & Strawn representing clients on bankruptcy and restructuring matters and later joined Holleb & Coff. Shortly after, she opened Greenberg Traurig, LLP’s Chicago office and was with the firm for over twenty-six years. Ms. Peterman not only appeared in bankruptcy court in Chicago and other jurisdictions, but has also appeared in district court and state court representing clients in bankruptcy, corporate transactions, and general litigation matters. Additionally, she serves as the Chair of the Chicago Restructuring and Bankruptcy Practice.

Ms. Peterman’s experience has focused on corporate restructurings and M&A transactions involving distressed businesses. Her experience as a bankruptcy attorney has allowed exposure to many areas of the law including healthcare, intellectual property, tax, real estate, labor and employment, and securities. Ms. Peterman’s knowledge and insight will serve her well as a United States Bankruptcy Judge. We welcome her to our bankruptcy bench.
