ISBA Presidential Statement on Recent Mass Shootings

As the nation mourns the loss of life resulting from yet another mass shooting this month, I join in the collective grief accompanying these senseless tragedies. As we all unfortunately know, on May 14, a racially motivated shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, resulted in the tragic death of 10 Black Americans. The following day, a shooting at a Taiwanese church in California resulted in one death and five wounded attendees. While the nation continued to mourn these horrific losses of life, yesterday brought additional anguish as news broke of another senseless act of violence in a Texas elementary school. A gunman entered a fourth-grade class and in his wake left 19 children dead along with two teachers who were heroically trying to protect them. As the mother of a young child, mere words cannot convey the overwhelming emotions brought on by these horrific events. As a legal professional, I feel compelled to use my position to speak up and implore the legal community to take action and work toward ending the mass shootings plaguing our great nation.

While I do not pretend to have all of the answers to the despairing problem of mass shootings, I do know that enough is enough. Something must be done on a national level to curb the recent rise in mass shootings. As we all work to build a more perfect Union, no American should live in fear of the routine tasks of visiting a supermarket, attending a church service, or sending our children to school.

I understand your concerns. Everyone is looking for a magic end to this senseless violence. But I am at a loss to know what any legal system can do that families can't, or won't, do. That is where the answer lies, not our legal system. No law will end, or even reduce, the violence.

"Something must be done..."

Yet we keep doing nothing.

Isn't complicated.

Study the rest of the civilized world and how they have solved the issue and replicate success.

And Crain’s today reported that of the 224 shooting deaths this year in Chicago alone, 100 were children. That’s five equivalent Texas school shootings ( one a month) just in Chicago! Crain’s reported that 942 people have been shot and wounded in Chicago - six every day. In addition to the horrible human toll, transit use, tourism, restaurants, theaters, and real estate sales are all negatively impacted by this carnage. All very sad.
