How Time Flies

 After several years of starts and stops (and a pandemic), the Illinois Supreme Court adopted amendments allowing lawyers to pay for lead generation, writes the ISBA’s General Counsel Charles J. Northrup in his July Illinois Bar Journal ethics column, titled, “How Time Flies.”  According to Northrup, the amendments provide much-needed clarity for lawyers and transparency for consumers. These paid lead generators are categorized as “intermediary connecting services,” defined as a “lawyer directory, referral service, matching service, bidding site, question-and-answer site, lead generator, or similar marketplace ….” Read on for Northrup’s recap of these amendments, which took effect July 1, and his explanation for how we arrived here.
