Douglas J. Quivey Appointed as United States Magistrate Judge

On May 8, 2025, Douglas J. Quivey was appointed as United States Magistrate Judge upon the recommendation of a duly appointed Merit Selection Panel and with the concurrence of the District Judges of the Court. Judge Quivey fills the seat recently vacated by United States Magistrate Judge Karen L. McNaught.

Judge Quivey will preside over civil cases by consent of the parties and preliminary proceedings in criminal cases; the trial and disposition of misdemeanor cases; discovery hearings, settlement conferences, and various other pretrial hearings in civil cases; and other matters as may be assigned in the Springfield Division of the Central District of Illinois. Judge Quivey, a native of Charleston, Illinois, attended Eastern Illinois University, receiving his Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in History in 1986, and his Masters of Arts in History in 1991. He received his JD, magna cum laude, in 1994, from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign College of Law. Upon graduation from law school, Judge Quivey served as a law clerk for the Honorable United States District Judge Richard Mills. He then spent nearly twenty years in private practice at three law firms in Charleston, Urbana, and Springfield, including being a shareholder of Londrigan, Potter, and Randle, P.C. After leaving private practice in 2014, Judge Quivey became an Assistant Federal Public Defender in the Central District of Illinois. In 2019, he was appointed First Assistant United States Attorney for the Central District of Illinois. From March of 2021, until December 31, 2021, Judge Quivey served as Acting United States Attorney. Since January of 2022, he has been the Branch Chief of the Springfield Office of the United States Attorney’s Office. Judge Quivey served 26 years in the Army and Army Reserve as an Infantry, Civil Affairs, and Psychological Operations Officer, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2010.
