The Illinois Judges Foundation will honor the chief judges of the state’s judicial circuits during its second annual Spring Reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 20, in the Renaissance Hotel, State Street and Wacker Drive, Chicago.
Cook County Judge Jesse G. Reyes, president of the foundation, and Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans will participate in presentation to each circuit chief of a memento inscribed “Hail to the Chief.”
The foundation also will welcome and honor the family of the late Harold W. Sullivan, a former Cook County presiding judge and founder of the Illinois Judges Association. The annual Judge Harold Sullivan Law School Scholarship is among beneficiaries of the reception.
Others service projects that the foundation supports include the ABA Judicial Intern Opportunity Program, the Second Chances Program, Chicago Access to Justice, and the “7 Reasons to Leave the Party” high school education presentations.
Tickets to the reception, at $125 per person, include hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. Law students may attend for $75 each. A portion of the contribution is tax-deductible.

The ISBA Intellectual Property Section Council and the DePaul University College of Law Center for Intellectual Property Law and Information Technology will host How to File a Copyright Application On-Line Using the eCO Electronic Filing System, a free brown bag copyright seminar on Wednesday, June 2, at DePaul's Loop campus. This live video conference with the U.S. Copyright Office is recommended for lawyers, paralegals and law students. The U.S. Copyright Office, in the summer of 2008, introduced the eCO electronic filing system for submitting copyright registration applications online. The seminar will be presented live by video conference, giving attendees the opportunity to see the presenters, Peter Vankevich, head of the Copyright Office Information Section and Ted Hirakawa, Assistant Chief of the Literary Division of the Copyright Registration and Recordation Program, on location at the Library of Congress, on Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C. Our presenters will conduct a simulated demonstration of registering a copyright application online and provide tips on how to make using the eCO fling system more efficient. Time permitting, Peter and Ted will field questions from attendees and share recent developments at the Library of Congress.

Dan Houlihan, who was Legislative Counsel for the Illinois State Bar Association for more than 30 years, is being honored by Misericordia/Heart of Mercy Home in Chicago as “BUM of the Year” at the Misericordia BUMS Golf Outing on Monday, June 14. Misericordia, which is a residential facility for developmentally and physically disabled children and adults from throughout the Chicagoland area, is a cause near and dear to Dan's heart. BUM of the Year is one of the highest honors given to Misericordia supporters and is indicative of the high regard in which Dan is held by Misericordia and others. The outing will be held at both Olympia Fields and Flossmoor Golf Clubs, and foursomes and sponsorships are still available.

Greenberg and Krysia Ressler"][/caption] The IBF/YLD Children's Assistance Fund recently presented a $5,000 grant to CASA Lake County. Pictured on the left is Terri Z. Greenberg, Executive Director of CASA and Krysia Ressler, Waukegan, member of the YLD Council. The grant was given to support the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers who represent children who are under court jurisdiction because they have suffered physical abuse, family violence, psycholgical torment, sexual abuse, neglect or abandonment while in the care of their parents. CASA volunteers work to help these children find safe, permanent homes.

ISBA President John G. O’Brien presented him with the award, which was created to recognize sworn law enforcement officers for conduct that promotes justice and to distinguish those individuals whose service to the public brings honor and respect to the entire criminal justice system.

Marla H. Kanemitsu, Special Counsel in the Chicago office of Kelley Drye & Warren LLP, was selected as a recipient of the 2010 Burton Awards for Legal Achievement recipients. The award honors excellence in legal scholarship and writing. Their article, “Insurance Coverage for Climate Change Suits: The Battle Has Begun,” was published in the Environmental Claims Journal. It analyzed two climate change-related lawsuits: Steadfast Insurance Co. v. The AES Corporation and Native Village of Kivalina, et al. v. ExxonMobil Corp., et al. Ms. Kanemitsu’s practice focuses on insurance recovery, international trade and customs and consumer financial services. Each year, only 30 articles are chosen from entries submitted by the nation’s largest and most prestigious law firms. The Eleventh Anniversary Burton Awards event will be held in the Library of Congress on June 14, 2010. The program is a non-profit academic effort. Guest speakers this year include Supreme Court Justice Ruth Ginsberg; author Bryan Garner; and Jeffrey Toobin a senior analyst for CNN Worldwide and author of The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court. Journalist and political commentator Bill Press will be the master of ceremonies.
