Bruce R. Johnson, a member of the Illinois bar since 1967 and most recently of Johnson & McCaa LLC, in Portland, Maine, has started a new firm, Johnson & Associates, in Dover, New Hampshire. Johnson & Associates will open its doors for business on January 4, 2010. The practice will focus on estate and business succession planning and will continue to serve Mr. Johnson's Illinois, Maine and New Hampshire clients.

Reeg Lawyers, LLC, a Mdiwest regional litigation law firm that focuses its practice on class actions, toxic torts, and products liability litigation, made substantial contributions of money and goods to the Project. The Pro Bono Project affords legal assistance to indigent clients in civil matters throughout the Parishes surrounding New Orleans.

Former ISBA President Downs inducted into Stetson University College of Law Hall of Fame

Former ISBA President Robert K. Downs was inducted into the Stetson University College of Law Hall of Fame on October 24 in Gulfport, Fla. Bob Downs is the founding partner, with his wife, Barbara, in the Chicago law firm of Downs Law Offices, P.C., which focuses on family law.  Downs has long been active in politics and the legal community. Early in his career, he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives and spent considerable time, involved with independent political, public interest and consumer cases.  He worked with the Church Federation of Greater Chicago creating legal clinics that later became the Chicago Volunteer Legal Services Foundation.  In 1995, he received the American Bar Association's Family Law Pro Bono Services Award.  He also received awards from the Legal Assistance Foundation of Chicago and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Chicago and Grinnell Colleges, distinguished Alumni Award. Downs served as President of the Illinois State Bar Association from 2005-2006.

William C. Butcher 1924-2009

William C. Butcher, formerly of Melrose Park, passed away on Nov. 28, 2009, at his home in Kent, Wash. Bill was born Jan. 30, 1924, in Rock Island. He married Velma Melton on Jan. 1, 1943, in Chicago. He served in the Army Air Corp in the South Pacific during WWII. He graduated from John Marshall Law School in 1953 and practiced law for 40 years. He enjoyed playing chess, and he loved the Lord. Having retired, Bill and Velma moved to Washington six years ago. Bill is survived by his brother, Ted, and sister, June; his daughter, Mary; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife and their daughter, Patricia. Burial will take place 9:00 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, 2009, at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Wash. Arrangements by Marlatt Funeral Home in Kent, Wash.

Saint Louis University wins Madison County Bar Association scholarship contest

The Madison County Bar Association invited representatives from Saint Louis University School of Law to its October Meeting to celebrate SLU as the winning school of the bar association's scholarship contest. Dean Lewis and Danielle Jacoby from SLU School of Law attended the meeting along with this year's recipient, Elizabeth Nguyen, to accept the contribution of $7,339.06 for the SLU scholarship fund. Scholarship committee chairs were Mary Nalefski, Irv Slate and Lawrence Taliana. The scholarship committee held a good-natured competition over a several month period between law school graduates from Saint Louis University, Washington University, Southern Illinois University and the University of Illinois to match donations from each school's member alumni with funds set aside by the entire membership of the Bar Association to benefit current and future law students. The lawyers donated a total of $18,321 to the law schools. The committee decorated the tables at Sunset Hills in Edwardsville with St.

Brooks Kushman hires Adelman to support growing trademark practice

In response to the continued growth of its trademark practice, Brooks Kushman law firm announced today that it has hired Emily S. Adelman as an associate attorney. Adelman will be responsible for counseling clients on trademark issues, managing large portfolios and supporting the enforcement needs of Brooks Kushman's trademark clients. Most recently, Adelman served as an associate attorney at Cook Alex Ltd. of Chicago, where she focused on U.S. and international patent and trademark prosecution matters, litigation, and patent validity and infringement analyses, as well as collaborated on various papers and presentations relating to developing patent and trademark law. Adelman earned a juris doctor degree and a Master of Laws in IP Law from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago and a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Additionally, she participated in the Pierce Law IP Summer Institute in Beijing, studying comparative IP law, and has taken courses at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. Van Fossan is a 2002 graduate of the University of Illinois and received her J.D. in 2005 from Southern Illinois University School of Law.
