    Tim Bertschy named Heyl Royster’s Managing Partner

    Heyl Royster announces that ISBA Past President Tim Bertschy has succeeded Gary Nelson as the firm’s Managing Partner. Mr. Nelson will continue at the firm as a shareholder and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee.

    “Tim and I have worked closely together during the past few years, and I have great confidence that he will succeed in his new role,” said Mr. Nelson. “His vision for the firm has made it a seamless transition.”

    Mr. Bertschy, who also serves as the chair of the firm’s Governmental and Business & Commercial Practices, said, “I’m honored to have the opportunity to serve Heyl Royster and its wonderful, hardworking team of attorneys during this period of unprecedented growth for the firm.”

    Joseph B. Carini Jr. 1934-2014

    Joseph B. Carini, Jr, 80. Beloved husband of 55 years to the late Barbara F. Carini, nee Fischer. His practical wisdom and thoughtful guidance endeared him to his seven children; Christian, Julia, David, Joseph III, Anne, Daniel and Mary. Devoted father-in-law to Laureen Bird, Carolyn Coyne, Maureen Craddock, Matthew Maddock, Frances Demos and Patrick McKenna; cherished Nonu of Catherine, John, Michael, Daniel, Kelly, Patrick, Frances, Dominic, Grace, Kailey, Joseph IV, Elizabeth, Matthew, Carolyn, Francesca, Christian, Maria, Jane and Julia: dear brother-in-law of Mary Ann (the late Roger) Anderson and the late Edwin (Diane) Fischer; uncle of many nieces and nephews. Joseph was a proud graduate of St. Mary of the Lake, St. George High School, Loyola University and Loyola University Chicago School of Law.

    Jack M. Siegel 1926-2014

    Jack M. Siegel was an expert in municipal law and a trusted and respected adviser to a succession of town leaders in a career that spanned more than 50 years as village attorney for both Schaumburg and Arlington Heights. Mr. Siegel was also village attorney for Riverwoods and had been corporation counsel for Evanston for 47 years.

    "He was the only village attorney we've ever had," Schaumburg Mayor Al Larson said. Larson said Mr. Siegel was not only a wise counselor but a vigorous defender of his town's interests.

    "He was just a soft-spoken, gentle man until he got into court, and then he was a ferocious tiger — or so I've heard," Larson said.

    Mr. Siegel, 88, who lived in Wilmette for more than 50 years, died of complications from cancer Tuesday, Sept. 23, in hospice in NorthShore Evanston Hospital, according to his wife, Jeanne.

    For the last 15 years, Mr. Siegel was with the Chicago office of Holland & Knight. Steven Elrod, the executive partner in the Chicago office, agreed with Larson's assessment of Mr. Siegel.

    "I've observed the transformation of Jack Siegel from soft-spoken intellectual to the tenacious litigator," Elrod said.

    He appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court twice on behalf of suburban towns, an experience he listed among the highlights of his career when celebrating his 50th anniversary with Arlington Heights in 2011.

    Diem, Stahl make partner at Quarles & Brady

The new partners are in the firm’s Chicago office.

    Peoria’s Muir a shining example for McAndrews Award

    Judge Henry Simmons appointed to NIU Board of Visitors

    Judge Henry Simmons (retired), Managing Partner at Clifford Law Offices, has been appointed to the Northern Illinois University College of Law Board of Visitors.

    The purpose of the Board is to increase awareness of the law school’s mission and programs within the Illinois legal community as well as serve in an advisory capacity to the administration and faculty in the evaluation of the law school’s educational programs.

    Among the current members of the Board of Visitors are U.S. District Court Judge James F. Holderman, Illinois Supreme Court Justice Thomas Kilbride, Cook County Circuit Court Judge William Haddad (retired) and Dr. Kenneth C. Chessick, a graduate of the school and Of Counsel at Clifford Law Offices.

    Judge Simmons graduated from Purdue University with a degree in economics and from DePaul University College of Law.

    Cascino joins Strauss & Malk LLP as Counsel

    Judge Henry Simmons, Managing Partner at Clifford Law Offices, to Receive Pro Bono Award

    Judge Henry Simmons (retired), Managing Partner at Clifford Law Offices, will be receiving the John Powers Crowley Justice Award from the Lawyers’ Assistance Program (LAP) Nov. 14.  The award is named for Justice Crowley who served as a federal judge of the Northern District of Illinois in the late 1970s.  

    The annual award, given to someone who has demonstrated a commitment to helping lawyers in need, is being awarded to Judge Simmons for his long and hard work with LAP over the years.  Illinois Supreme Court Justice Hon. Anne M. Burke will be the keynote speaker at the event to be held at the Union League Club, 65 E. Jackson Blvd., Chicago.

    LAP is a not-for profit organization that helps Illinois lawyers, judges, law students and their families with alcohol abuse, drug dependency or mental health problems.  Its services include education, information and referral, peer assistance and intervention.

    Hon. Duane G. Walter 1926-2014

    Retired DuPage County Judge Duane Gerald Walter, 88, of Bloomingdale passed away on Sept. 7, 2014. He was known for his love of conducting weddings.

    Duane was born on January 8, 1926, in Des Moines, Iowa; moved to Chicago and graduated from Lake View High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and then obtained a law degree from Chicago - Kent College of Law in 1954. He had a distinguished career as an attorney before being appointed Associate Judge of the DuPage County 18th Judicial Circuit Court.

    After retiring, Duane owned The Old Town Wedding Chapel in Bloomingdale, Illinois, for 16 years. Duane was an active member of the DuPage County Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association and the DuPage County Republican Committee.

    He will be missed dearly by his wife, Beverly (nee Wise), children Gary (Katie) Walter, Linda (Jim) Rinella, Dawn (Paul) VanLaanen, Donna (Dave) Jansen, Bruce Walter, Lori Vanagunas, Lisa (Kirk) Schmitt, Dr. Kevin (Katie) Walter, Bob (Amy) Miller, sixteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

    Duane is preceded in death by parents Gerald and May (nee Peppmeier) Walter, former wife Lois Belle Gibbs, and sister and brother in law, Glenys and Joe Dombrowski.

    Edward C. Moehle 1925-2014

    Edward Carl Moehle, 88, of Pekin, passed away on September 13, 2014 at his home.

    He was born December 7, 1925 in Okawville to Walter August and Minna Elizabeth (Miché) Moehle.

    Ed was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater as Chief Clerk at the headquarters of General Douglas MacArthur and worked for the International Military Tribunal of the Far East in Tokyo, Japan. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.
