Chief Judge Stephen J. Culliton announced that the Court is accepting applications to fill the vacancy for the Office of Associate Judge of the 18th Judicial Circuit of Illinois, DuPage County. The vacancy is a result of the elevation of Associate Judge Daniel P. Guerin to Circuit Judge. Applications to fill this vacancy will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Jan. 14, 2010. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, licensed to practice law in this state, and a resident of DuPage County. Two original applications, submitted on the prescribed application form, must be filed with: Cynthia Y. Cobbs, Director Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts 3101 Old Jacksonville Road Springfield, IL 62704-6488 Applications can be obtained from the Chief Judge's Office, the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts or from the Supreme Court's website. Applications may not be submitted electronically or via fax.

A video created by the Lawyers' Assistance Program was shown at the ISBA Assembly meeting on Saturday at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers. LAP Executive Director Janet Piper Voss also addressed the Assembly and urged lawyers to seek help for themselves and anyone they know struggling with depression or dependency issues. Encouraging lawyers to engage in pro bono work continues to occupy the time and energy of so many state bar associations and other organizations across the country. Why? Because there is no disputing that there is a lack of legal assistance available to the poor. Legal needs studies from across the country, including here in Illinois, consistently find that less than 20 percent of the legal needs of the poor are addressed by direct legal representation by a lawyer. Despite the efforts of many skilled and dedicated people, participation by attorneys as a whole in pro bono activity is still quite low.

Ronald Langacker first provided volunteer legal services through Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance when he was an attorney in Danville. He took one or two cases at a time, which he felt was not burdensome, and received the Pro Bono Attorney of the Year award for Vermilion County in 1999.

For members of the Illinois legal profession, pro bono practice support resources are as easy as a click away, at www.IllinoisProBono.org. That website, which is hosted by Illinois Legal Aid Online, now offers web pages with resources targeted at specific types of pro bono practitioners, including senior attorneys, federal government attorneys, corporate counsel, paralegals, and law students.

David F. Rolewick, senior partner of the law firm of Rolewick & Gutzke, P.C., in Wheaton, has recently been appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court to serve as the Chairperson of the Review Board of the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission of the Court. Mr. Rolewick has been a member of the Review Board for three years, and prior thereto he served as a hearing panel member for the ARDC. David's brother, Carl Rolewick, served as the first Administrator of the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission for the Illinois Supreme Court.

The Illinois Judges Association will present "Ten Things Lawyers and Judges Need To Know About Military and Veterans' Laws" at the ISBA/IJA Joint Meeting on Friday, Dec. 11. This program will take place from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. in Chicago Ballroom 10 at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers, 301 E. North Water Street. Participating in this program will be Joseph Butler and Brian Clauss, Co-Executive Directors of the John Marshall Veterans Legal Support Center & Clinic; John Costello, Illinois Attorney General's Office and Colonel Richard Fox, Illinois Army National Guard.
