From the Chair By Aaron W. Brooks Legal Technology, Standing Committee on, September 2013 Welcome to the first CoLT Newsletter of the 2013-2014 ISBA year. This is my second opportunity to serve in a bar association leadership role, having previously chaired the Intellectual Property Section Council. I learned a lot from that experience, and even more from watching and working with the others who have chaired these committees and sections. Mainly though, what I have come to believe is that my core job as Chair is to be the temporary custodian of an important mission.

Governmental involvement necessary for statement to be considered testimonial hearsay By Mark Kevin Wykoff, Sr. Criminal Justice, April 2013 The Illinois Appellate Court, in People v. Richter, held that governmental involvement is required for a statement to be considered testimonial hearsay. Given that defendant’s statements were not made to government officials, and that there was no governmental involvement in the creation of the statements, the statements did not constitute testimonial hearsay. Thus, the hearsay evidence was admissible at his trial.
