The International Legal Honor Society of Phi Delta Phi, a 150-year-old law student-based organization dedicated to professionalism and civility in the practice of law, has announced the election of its international officers for the 2018-2020 biennium: President Patricia Hodny, Vice President Alma Esperanza Santa Ana Vara, Director Michael Phillips, Director Javier Christian Súarez Torres, and Director Constance Mutong, who collectively will serve as members of the Phi Delta Phi Board of Directors, known as its council. Executive Director Tim Wheat will continue his service to Phi Delta Phi as an ex officio member of the council. Also elected were three justices of Phi Delta Phi’s court of appeals (its board of trustees): Chief Justice Joseph F. Vitu, Jr., Justice Jeffrey Flint Buebendorf, and Justice Julie Sumner.

Emery Laurence Duffy, 87, of Crystal Lake, died Monday, Nov. 5, in McHenry. He was born November 14, 1930, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Joseph P. and Laura (nee Schulte) Duffy.
Duffy was a devoted family man and well-known attorney in McHenry County. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1951, fought in the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in 1953 as a master sergeant. During his service, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross. He started his law practice in Savannah, Georgia, in 1960 alongside his brother, attorney Robert Duffy. He moved to Illinois in 1971 to be closer to his wife’s parents and his mother, and was admitted to the Illinois Bar. He practiced law in Crystal Lake until his retirement.

Illinois Supreme Court and Illinois Appellate Court justices welcomed 1,283 new attorneys to the legal profession on Nov. 8 during admissions ceremonies held at five different locations across the state.
ISBA staff members were in attendance at all five ceremonies to welcome the state's newest attorneys to the profession, take photos, and talk about the benefits of ISBA membership, which is free for one year for new admittees. Member benefits can be activated by filling out the New Admittee Membership Form.
All of those who were sworn in have passed the Illinois State Bar Examination and a required ethics examination and were certified by the Supreme Court Committee on Character and Fitness. They bring the total number of licensed attorneys in Illinois to approximately 98,000.

Mark A. Braun, 93, died Nov. 3 surrounded by his family. He was born in Athens, Wisconsin on May 18, 1925, the second son of the late Albert and Florence (Brady) Braun.
He graduated from Athens High School in 1943. After three years in the U.S. Navy flight program and undergraduate studies at Marquette University, he graduated from the Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 1949. He began his career with Klohr & Merrick, whose practice concentrated in workers compensation law. Braun focused on that field, a distinct departure from common law. His practice included issues of interpretation in the evolution of the workers compensation statute and cases leading to the codification of the principles of indemnity and contribution.

The Illinois Bar Foundation will honor Hon. Dennis J. Burke, Ret., and Ruth Ann Schmitt with the 2018 Distinguished Service to Law & Society Awards at the annual Fellows Breakfast on Dec. 7 at the University Club Chicago. Richard R. Winter will receive the 2018 Honorary Fellow Award.
