Lawyers, more so than other professionals, have a duty to support and defend the rule of law. With that duty comes the responsibility to identify actions and or persons who threaten to violate and or violate the rule of law, regardless of locale.
Therefore, the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) International and Immigration Law Section Council denounces Vladimir Putin and his regime for their actions against Ukraine, the Ukrainian people, and the Russian people. Those actions did not commence in February of this year nor March of 2014. Vladimir Putin and his regime violated and continue to violate each attribute that defines basic principles of decency.

The Illinois State Bar Association's judicial ratings by county for the November 8, 2002 election are available online.
In Cook County, an ISBA Judicial Evaluations committee used the results of a questionnaire, background investigations, and in-person interviews to rate candidates for all judicial offices. Candidates for the Appellate Court outside of Cook County were also evaluated using this method.

Today, history was made by the ABA House of Delegates. In an age where other professionals are being bought and sold like commodities, the ABA's House of Delegates reaffirmed a decades old ABA policy that non-lawyer ownership of law firms, and fee splitting with non-lawyers is anathema to the legal profession and in direct conflict with the core values that have sustained our profession for generations. In the legal profession, protection of the public, particularly against predatory pecuniary policies is paramount, and will continue to be the primary focus of our profession.

On Tuesday, August 9, the American Bar Association’s House of Delegates formally adopted Resolution 402, which reaffirms longstanding ABA policy adopted in July 2000 that sharing legal fees with nonlawyers and the ownership or control of law practices by nonlawyers is inconsistent with the core values of the legal profession. The Resolution was sponsored and proposed by the Illinois State Bar Association.
