Joe Schomberg, an associate at the Chicago office of Sidley Austin LLP, is winner of first place and $2,000 in the ISBA’s 2020 Lincoln Award Legal Writing Contest. His article, “Major Buzzkill: The Relationship (or Lack Thereof) Between State Legalized Cannabis and the Bankruptcy Code,” will appear in the February issue of the Illinois Bar Journal.

The 2019 Joint Midyear Meeting was held Dec. 5-7, 2019, at the Westin O'Hare in Rosemont. Attendees celebrated the profession, discussed issues of mutual interest to the bench and bar, attended business meetings, earned CLE credit, and expanded their social and professional networks at receptions and dinners.

The 2019 Joint Midyear Meeting in Rosemont this year will feature a shuttle service to accommodate holiday shoppers who are interested in exploring the area.

Mark your calendars! Every few years, the Illinois State Bar Association organizes an admission ceremony at the U.S. Supreme Court. This year's ceremony will take place June 14-15, 2020, in Washington, D.C.
Only 50 spots will be available. A special group hotel room rate will be available at the Willard Intercontinental Hotel for admittees, their families, and guests.
To be eligible, you must be an active lawyer member of the ISBA, admitted to practice more than 3 years, and not have any adverse disciplinary action pronounced or in effect during that 3-year period.

Help us make the 2020 invitational a success by participating! All lawyers, judges, law students, and paralegals are invited to volunteer as judges and jurors for the 2020 invitational, which provides an opportunity for students to learn what it is like to prepare and present a legal case before the Illinois courts.
Volunteer registration information will be distributed in January 2020. No trial experience is necessary.

At the Dec. 7, 2019 meeting of the ISBA Assembly, two “Under 35” delegates to the ABA House of Delegates will be elected, one from Cook County and one from the area outside Cook County. The nominees for these positions must be members of the ISBA in good standing from the appropriate area and be under the age of 35 at the time the ABA term commences. The elected delegates will serve for two-year terms commencing June 2020 and will join the ISBA delegation at the ABA annual meeting in Chicago in August 2020.

The Illinois State Bar Association honored the Class of 1969 Distinguished Counsellors on Nov. 14 at the Palmer House Chicago. The title is conferred annually upon ISBA members who are completing their 50th year of practice.
